Common questions
What is the Menu & Signs Decoder? It is the part of Opa that reads Greek to you rather than for you. Menu holds the words that carry a taverna menu, Signs holds the road, port and shop signage, and Alphabet teaches the letters. You browse by shape rather than typing, because nobody can type Greek on holiday. The Alphabet section is free forever.
What is the Polite/Friendly switch? Greek has a polite you, esis, with plural verb endings, used for officials, shopkeepers you have just met and anyone older than you; and a friendly you, esy, for people your own age. Flip the switch in Opa and every affected phrase changes its wording, its sounds-like line and its audio to match. Phrases said across an official desk stay polite automatically. Set your default in Settings, or change it on any phrase.
Do I need to know the Greek alphabet? No, and learning it is easier than it looks. Every phrase carries a plain sounds-like line under it with the stressed syllable in capitals, so you can say anything in the app without reading a letter of Greek. When you do want to read, the built-in Read Greek in 60 Seconds guide is free and covers the twelve letters that unlock most signage.
What is free? Opa is free to download and every phrase is browsable. The whole Greetings & Basics category is free forever with its audio, the entire Alphabet section of the Decoder is free forever, and a sample of the Menu and Signs entries is too. Opa Pro unlocks the rest of the Decoder, every other category’s audio, the word-by-word breakdowns, the Show the Card screen and Practice.
How do I unlock everything? Opa Pro is available Weekly or Yearly, each with a 7-day free trial, or as a one-time Lifetime purchase. Start the free trial from the paywall.
How do I restore a purchase? Settings, then Restore Purchases.
Does it work offline? Yes. All phrases and all audio are bundled in the App, so everything works with no signal and no account. Perfect for the plane and for arrival.
What is Show the Card? Any phrase turns into a giant, full-screen Greek card you can show a taxi driver, a ticket agency or a hotel desk when saying it out loud feels like too much. Tap it to flip back to the English and the pronunciation.
